What mattress is better than Saatva?
Established in 2010, Saatva specializes in direct-to-consumer luxury bed mattress under 3 brand names: Saatva, Loom & Leaf, and Zenhaven. Pocketed coils give the Saatva Classic a great amount of bounce near the top, and a plush top adds softness. As with all of the Saatva Company’s mattresses, the Saatva Classic is delivered by movers, rather than in a box.

Note: Saatva recently updated the Zenhaven, changing the type of latex utilized in its foam layers. The Zenhaven now features Dunlop latex, instead of Talalay latex; learn more about the distinctions below. We plan to evaluate the new variation soon and will update this guide with our impressions.
The all-foam Zenhaven consists mainly of latex, which is fundamentally resilient. The Zenhaven is also flippable (the Luxury Plush side feels medium-firm, while the Mild Firm side feels a bit firmer), which may prove valuable if you’re unsure what you prefer or if your needs alter over time. This is not a traditionally soft bed mattress, however it provides a flexible cushion, excellent edge support, and a subtle springiness. Given its inherent durability, the Zenhaven must work well for individuals who weigh more than 200 pounds.

As Wirecutter’s senior staff writer for sleep, I’ve spoken with scores of professionals in the bed mattress market and in materials science; visited lots of mattress display rooms, factories, and shops; and read the fine print on requirements, service warranties, and return policies. Most recently, monitoring editor Courtney Schley evaluated the Saatva Latex Hybrid in her home for a number of weeks.

We haven’t yet done a deep dive into the “natural” claims of Saatva or of other “eco-friendly” brand names. We do understand that the business utilizes thistle pulp or organic wool as a flame retardant (as opposed to chemicals or fiberglass) and just natural cotton (instead of artificial blends) in its covers. As do other online bed mattress business, Saatva touts such extras as zoned layers for “ideal spine assistance”; we’re less satisfied with those features and more appreciative of Saatva’s responsive customer service and durable foams and coils.
